Made in the Appalachian Mountains of Western North Carolina in the County of Madison famed for a Civil War Massacre (Shelton Laurel Massacre) .. (google it).
This nutcracker is made to last at least 10 years or you can have another one free of charge if I'm still alive.I've made them for 30 years now and know them to be the best you can buy. And they do the best job of cracking nuts of any others available.
I start with a 2 by 4 of Southern Appalachian Yellow Pine and fashion it from there. The knocker stick is made of kiln dried red oak because it is the impact member and has to absorb the shock of cracking. The nutcracker has dado joints, 8 wood screws, wood glue, and TLC. The CrackerBox is also made of Appalachian Pine and has dado joints for strength, 16 wood screws, and elbow grease. The stain for both is lemon oil with dark walnut pigment added.
The nutcracker is not made to be pretty or valuable because of the kinds of material used but is is made for the purpose of cracking nuts of all sizes and shapes without adjustment. And fast too! Up to 30 nuts per minute.
How to crack a nut and not damage the meat inside the shell is the idea behind this wooden marvel. You get a lot of whole kernels. Cracked nuts go on one side and those awaiting to be are in the other half of the CrackerBox. No messy shell scatter to clean up !
Most every thing that comes from these beautiful mountains has the flavor of it's citizens. That of hardy, sturdy, made to last and at present from the decendants of those hillbillys of yesteryear. Even I can operate a computer and also work with my hands.
This nutcracker is not found at some yard sale but is brand new and made by me. They are mostly passed on to the children of the estate as once you buy one you never need another. Old grandfathers treasure them because of their ease of operation. Old grandmothers prize them for their baking needs. Children and grandchildren remember them as a source of pleasant memories from days past when life was more simple and less hectic.
Don't let it's rubber band power deter your consideration to order. This is a serious tool !!
